Computerization of Railway Receipt
Kolkata,
June 24, 2008 :
South
Eastern Railway has started generating computerizing Railway Receipts through a
large network of computerized Freight
Operations Information System.
Presently, Railway Receipts are being issued at 49 loading locations over
S.E.Railway. The system is capable of
generating Railway Receipt (RR) at the siding itself. The Railway Receipt can
be seen at any of the terminal where the goods has to be received, thus dispensing
the physical transfer of RR from the originating point to the terminal
point.
Freight
Operations Information System
(FOIS) has been one of the major achievement in computerization of the working
in Railway after Passenger Reservation system(PRS). FOIS is an on-line system for management and
control of freight movement and enables freight customers to have instant
access to information regarding the current status of their consignments in
transit. This also enables Railway to plan the empty movement to the siding and
at the same time provides the customers the basic data of loading and unloading
time taken at the siding/goods sheds. FOIS yields a unified freight data base
for all Indian Railways as of PRS and helps Railways in reducing detention of
the rakes at sidings or enroute.
FOIS has been implemented in S E Railway at
67 terminals by 2007-08. Further, 23
terminals are likely to be covered in 2008-09. This system has been
instrumental in improving the Railway’s efficiency and has been the most
effective instrument in ensuring optimum utilization of stock leading to
increase of 12% in loading and also 12% in freight earnings of S.E.Railway.
The system has in fact started giving results
which can be seen in the form of reduced wagon turn round as compared to the
previous year.
The system is aimed at –
1. Providing timely information to the freight customers
so that they can organize and arrange loading and unloading at minimum
cost(machines & labours) thereby helping in their Inventory Management.
2. Providing information to the freight customers about
their rake and the transit time (tracking the rake).
3. Helping electronic transfer of freight amount from the
customers account to railway account directly, thereby dispensing physical
handling of cash and draft/cheque etc.
