About Us
OUR GLORIOUS PAST
SER, traditionally known as Bengal Nagpur Railway (BNR) was formed in
April 1887 to take over the Chattisgarh State Railway for converting it
from metre gauge to broad gauge. Founding fathers barely surmised its
branching into multi-dimensions and scaling new heights in a short span
of time. With the passage of time, SER, the successor of BNR has emerged
as the largest freight carrier straddling across seven mineral rich
states of Indian Union. The erstwhile SER consisting of merely 12% of
the total length of rail line while its contribution to the freight
traffic was 40%. With its geographical spread and the traffic mix drawn
around the major core streams of coal, iron & steel, fertilizer, cement
etc, SER’s contribution to the Indian economy and industrial growth was
unparallel. Its role in our external trade can hardly be over emphasized
as it served all the major ports in the East Coast viz. Vishakapatnam,
Haldia and Paradip. With the legacy of this rich tradition, the SER in
its present context plays the strategic role in our industrial economy
along with East Coast Railway and South East Central Railway.
