Stores Department is one of the major service departments of Indian Railways, catering to the needs of all other departments like Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Operating etc. Stores Department in South Eastern Railway, has a glorious history of meeting the challenges thrown from time to time. During 1894, when South Eastern Railway was known as Bengal Nagpur Railway (BNR), Mr. D.B.Critchiey was the head of the Stores organisation. Presently, Stores department in South Eastern Railway is headed by Sri. S. Paul (Controller of Stores), who is assisted by two SAG Officers (Chief Materials Manager), ten JAG Officers (Deputy Chief Materials Manager), fifteen Senior Scale Officers (Senior Materials Manager) and twenty five Junior Scale Officers (Assistant Materials Manager). The headquarters at Garden Reach deals with purchase of various items, and, has a staff strength of 312 (Grade ‘C’ – 253 Nos. & Grade ‘D’ – 59 Nos.). The staff strength of various depots is 1821 Nos. (Grade ‘C’ – 840 Nos. and Grade ‘D’ – 981 Nos.).

In South Eastern Railway, there are nineteen independent depots attached to different sheds, printing different forms, selling scraps etc. In addition to this, there are five depots in Kharagpur Workshop catering to the needs of one of the major workshops in Indian Railways. Around 6,600 items are stocked in different depots, as above.

The total yearly purchase, made by Stores Department in last two years, was around Rs.225 Crores per year (approximately). Stores Department has always excelled in sale of scraps, earning major revenue for South Eastern Railway. The scrap sale targets fixed by Railway Board, for last two years, were achieved by South Eastern Railway. South Eastern Railway has always excelled in materials management over the years. Because of these high credentials, Stores department of South Eastern Railways was awarded the best Railway Shield for the year 2002-03.
